Basic Horse Care and Management

Course Description:
A basic guide to horse care, health, feeding and management, working safely around horses, and responsible horse ownership. Includes hands-on lessons with horses but does NOT include riding.
Course Objectives:
For new or novice horse owners, or persons interested in learning more about horses. Provide all the basic information about how to be a responsible horse owner, including the basic requirements of the horse, and working safely around horses. When student completes this course, he/she will have a good working knowledge of what it takes to be a responsible horse owner and will be prepared to provide capable horse management and care for their own horse or horses under their supervision.
Student Learning Outcomes:
1. Analyze whether or not owning a horse is a realistic thing for them.
2. Describe options available if they want to have a horse but are not in a position to take care of one.
3. Describe what the basic needs of horses are, and costs involved in maintaining them properly.
4. Demonstrate how to work with horses safely, handling and groundwork, and how to provide basic care.
5. Locate resources available for unexpected or unusual situations that may arise involving horse management.
3 credit hours.
